I think the song is a guy regretting having tried to commit suicide. I think he has just tried to commit suicide and while he is lying there dying is wishing his(girl?)friend would come in and find him, that explains the first two lines.
Then the second two lines are his mother having told him not to do it because it is a cowards way out, and a real man would stick around.
The chorus is him lying there dying, that's the "so damn cold" line, "and if this blood don't turn to gold I think I'm doomed" is saying that unless a miracle happens, he is doomed to die.
the line "the time has come my friend to run" is him reaching the point where he tries to kill himself, the next line is that he has left the gun and a bunch of roses for his friend when they find his body.
