This is about Freuds' tripartite theory of the id, ego and superego and their interactions and such, isn't it? I think it touches on the death and life instinct (Thanatos and eros...?), and 'do what you please' has to be the id adhering to the pleasure principle. Wonder if the hero being referred to is the ideal self pursued by the super ego?
