Amazing music and the lyrics are really vague and you have to think about it for a minute before you start to see what they're talking about. I think this song is talking about a guy and girl who are getting really tempted and the guy is saying he will fail in that and won't make her proud (my body will fall before I let you down,I'll make you proud before I love again.) Then he's regretting it by saying "how shameful we've become". Then he shows how little of a chance he feels like he has in keeping a shameless relationship by saying "we left a child to untie sailor knots and eye the cresting rocks". Then it's possible he's referring to God when he says "If we overlook the captain's cries, we'll never kiss the shore." He's pretty much saying if we don't pay attention to what "the captain" (can't be sure who that is) is saying, then we won't make it and we'll fail.
