Cover art for Hazard lyrics by Richard Marx

I've listened to this song extensively throughout my life, i love it and i've loved reading all the different interpretations. I recently watched the video and it seemed to fall into place.

There is a clip in the video of him as a child (perhaps aged 7, looks like it) setting fire to his house with his mum and her lover inside. I think it stemmed from his father leaving them both and him perhaps resenting his mother for that.

So 'my mum came to hazard when i was just 7' could well mean he killed her and that is why the villagers didn't like him. Although he was too young to be convicted he was an outcast from here on in, though its not clear who he lives with (probably has no relevance) Over the years of not being accepted and hated he befriended Mary and they became lovers.

The people of the town were not to know as their relationship would have been doomed due to his past so they would spend their time by the river, but the sheriff was on to them, taking pictures of them. He hated what was going on and wanted it to end by whatever means necessary, and with this scenario he can get rid of them both.

His break come when he sees Marx watching Mary make out with another man, meaning he would now have motive, so he proceeds with plan to murder her and then frame Marx, who is devastated at her death.....you see the video do a full circle and at the end hes back by the river cutting his hair wishing himself dead so he can join Mary, he has nothing/no-one left now.

If you see there are clips in the video of Mary being followed by someone in a car, the sheriff and at the end she says to him 'everyone thinks i should be afraid of you, but i'm not' She then gets into his car and the rest is history.

The end
