Background: Okay. So this is definitely my favorite song on the new Incubus album. I saw them last night at Hollywood Bowl. Today, I decided to watch the movie "The Black Dahlia" because we were in Hollywood last night.
Lyrical meaning/interpretation: One of the last scenes in the movie "The Black Dahlia" shows Hillary Swank (the villain) finally being revealed as the murderer of Elizabeth Short. However, in the scene, she is revealed from the shadows in a black top hat and she flicks her switchblade in attempt to kill one of the policeman. It dawned on me right then of the possibility that this song is written about the infamous murder of Elizabeth short as well as the movie "The Black Dahlia". Consider the lyrics throughout the song: "I keep getting the eyes from the girl in the thigh highs", "I think of getting a rise on all the American thighs, her American thighs", "I keep getting attacked by the girl in the black hat", and particularly, "Light like a feather bright like a dying star. Cut those together girl that is what you are. Wild eyes forever built to punish and persuade."
