Here's my thought on this song:

She's trying to persuade someone away from dropping their whole lives to chase fame and fortune that will probably never come to them.

Parts of the song are their argument against her: "It's just around the corner, I'm almost there. I'm on my way to success. It's not my fault, I can't start my own winning streak. I have to wait for my time to come, and it's almost here."

To which she says: "I don't want to lose you to a futile pursuit. You have all these preconceived notions, and I don't want to see you chasing empty goals just because someone told you it's a good idea."

Said "good ideas" include: Going to Vegas/New York/Mexico Losing 10 pounds Sailing the ocean

The part that really hits it home for me is this line: "And have a deep sleep upon a sweet dream I'll never realize"

At least, that's how I interpreted it.
