For me this song is all about addiction and regret. There is a lot of imagery taken from Dr Faustus by Christopher marlowe. The concept in that play is Faustus selling his soul to the devil for 24 years of hedonism. Throughout the play he hears voices of conscience but never listens or repents. Then, at the end of the 24 years the devil comes for him at midnight ("midnight is coming') and he is taken to hell ('into the darkness I walk as the world goes on by'). I think in this context it's all about how addiction blinds us to ourselves and the people around us who care for us and perhaps how we need to go to hell before we realise that we were wrong.
