Cover art for Annie Wants a Baby lyrics by Red Hot Chili Peppers

I think this song is about a woman who wants to procreate by any means, but she hasn't a clue about how to do it. "Go, back and redefine the line" or "It's time to redesign the sign" means that having a baby it's not so simple since she's been trying to get pregnant for a long time. "She had a goldmine, but then she wasted it away"--> reference to abortion. Annie tries to sing to turn off the pain she feels ("nothing stops the ache"). Probably she's tried so many times to get pregnant that everybody in her family started to believe in some omen ("cosma, shiva, made you a believer"). The second verse explains menopause (the "missing pieces" are the ovarian cells,"time decreases" because she keeps losing them- "before it's time to close the store" (permanent cessation of her reproductive function)) The "installation" which Anthony refers to is having a foetus growing and developing leaving her mother alone for nine months (she'll stay at home more than ever, taking care of herself). The "liberation" is actually giving birth to the baby. And is the "only seed we ever farm" because having children is the way we leave a sign in this world. There's no happy ending, since this "sugar daddy" leaves Annie (they both become older and cannot have babies anymore). Sad story.

My Interpretation

I also understand that song the same way, but I believe that Lucy is a girl who is trying to conceive and Annie is just the girl she notes having children, and there is a sense of injustice because Lucy can't, but Annie can.
