I interpreted this song in an entirely different way. When I first heard this song I thought about a long distance relationship. Two people constantly far away, and when they do see each other close up, they soak up every little detail of the other person. The second part of each line indicated the previous distance to me, rather than being "too close".

That last line "Up so close, I never see the sky so blue" was the part that indicated that he was happy to be so close. It's as if the world around you is brighter now that the other person is there. In the very end of the song I hear him say "oh it's so sad." Long distance couples get that little time together, but they always have to go back to being far away.
