I can't believe there aren't any comments on this! This is an incredible song in so many ways. Maybe it's just me but it sounds a lot like the new Iron & Wine (of course this predates that).
The writing on the wall is a reference to Daniel 5; its cryptic message, only readable by the prophet Daniel, foretold the end of Belshazzar's kingdom. My roommate and I were just talking about this recently after reading through the Old Testament. All throughout the Bible we see leaders who are utterly dependent on the men and women of God to be their spiritual advisors, otherwise thier kingdoms would not prevail. But many just want to save their behinds and could care less about knowing the God from whom they get such knowledge. Sadly, we see this even today, and even with leaders who claim to be Christians...
Anyway, that's what I see this song to be about. The Bible is a bold reminder of what happens when we put our trust anywhere but in God, yet we only "softly" keep it in our memory. We recognize that the fall has made us this way, and that we weren't created to live in fear, but freedom. The nations of the world are crying out from all the suffering; (whether or not we hear it) they are calling for the Christians to rise up and be the catalysts of change we were made to be. But do the people recognize that they have to be on board with God's plan for change to come? Rarely.
I'm not sure what the hills of indigo blue are, but they bring to mind Abraham and the promise God made regarding his legacy and children as many as the stars. Or they could be a reference to looking for a sign.
