This may be a stretch, but I'm thinking that this song is about previous guitarist John Frusciante.
"Dreaming of the golden years, I see you had to change careers"
Anthony misses the "good old days" with John Frusciante, but realizes that he has to do what he has to do.
"I saw you in the church and there was no time to exchange.
You were getting married and it felt so very strange.
I guess I didn't see it coming,
Now I guess it's me who's bumming.
Dreaming of the golden years,
You and I were mixing tears.
Not today, not for me but someone.
I never could get used to, so now I will refuse to."
John recently got married and, from what I can imagine, the relationship between the band and John had gotten strained during the recent hiatus.
This was my first thought on hearing the song too. Partly because I was trying to listen out for the song about him leaving, admittedly, but it all fits too well to not be about him.

Yes, that is definitely a stretch. It is definitely NOT about John :)

I am sure it is about a former girlfriend/lover of his. Or, perhaps, it is not about an actual girl he knows but a typical scenario in Hollywood; someone who used to be a model or such ("smiling was your money-maker"), and has fallen so far she is now a prostitute ("the driftwood in your eyes said nothing short of love for pay").

Lots of interpretations... I wish I knew the narrators real point of view.

And what about the line that says "You can't hide from me girl, so never mind what I do"? Doubt this is about John.
