I love this song. There is so much passion in chris cornell's voice it gives me the shivers!

No one has mentioned the last line yet, I think it's very telling what the song is about.

Bad luck will follow you If you keep me on a leash and You drag me along

It's about an imperfect relationship, he loves the woman (I presume it's a woman!) but perhaps she views him as not right for her, that is, she tries to change him or control him and maybe uses him (You wore me out like an old winter coat trying to be safe from the cold) and berates him (calls him a dog) when she can't change him.

He is what he is and will not change. He sleeps out with the 'badgers and wolves' because he is free. But he tries to be what she wants but it isn't good enough (You threw me out 'cause I went digging for gold And I came home with a handful of coal)

He loves her and accepts all that she throws at him but will not throw it back at her. He will either love her fully, unconditionally — or leave completely. (Lovely, passionate man!)

BUT at the end of the song he is warning her: Don't put me on a leash because I will leave you. Your bad luck will follow you because you won't accept me as I am. And you can't control me, woman!

Lol, I guess it's quite a literal interpretation but it makes sense to me. :)

I don't know much about Andrew Wood as I don't know his full life story, so I'm not sure if this song is about him in some way?
