Black Tongue Lyrics

I think this song is about someone who witnessed something evil but forced to keep to him/herself.

"I burned out my eyes I cut off my tongue"

This person is forced not to tell anybody about the evil he/she saw.

"I sealed them with all of the silver And now I have none"

I imagine silver as something like money, like bribery, and by taking bribes he/she has no more dignity ("now I have none").

"You killed the life You took the diamond You killed the vine Death of the sun"

This shows the impact of the evil acts that the evildoer caused. The evildoer took something precious (diamond) and abandoned all hope of moral thing (killed the life, killed the vine. I guess vine here is a metaphor for something that can bear the fruit of goodness). Death of the sun shows how darkness prevails.

"You can run to the sea You can run to the forest You can hide, but you'll never escape

You've run out of lies You've run out of time"

The witness is saying that the evildoer will be caught eventually, just wait and time will reveal the truth.

I think Mastodon sounds very mature in this song. I mean, almost all of us witness evil things everyday (at least I can say that I do) and they admit that sometimes it's easier to be pragmatic: to take whatever we are offered and just shut the hell up and hope that someday everything will be revealed and justice will be done. I feel like I can relate because I'm getting more and more pragmatic and saying goodbye to idealism as I get older.

Musically they also sounds very mature. They might not be as brutal as before but hey, everybody grows. I think it would be disappointing if an artist sounds the same for 10 years.

Btw, I made songmeanings account just to post this comment.
