This feels like a counterpart to Iron to me. That song is about a soldier broken and muted by the horrors of war and the deeds he's done, this feels like that same person returning home and slowly coming back into himself with help from a loved one. Excellent songs, whether they bear a relation to each other or not.

Remember that his album is a complete story overall

"Most of my sweet memories were buried in the sand

The fire and the pain will now be coming to an end"

He's probably the soldier from "Iron" who then found this new love who...

"...washed away the mud stuck on my hands

All the things you're trying to do make me a better man"

Trying to overcome the stuff he saw/did/felt in some kind of "war"?

So yeah, you are right.
