I believe his ex-girlfriend was an alcoholic who turned alcoholic who turned to drinking or him when she had issues. He says "find someone else to play" meaning she was toying with his heart[either she was a liar or a cheater for entertainment]. He makes known she has problems, most people wouldn't make a big deal out of one or two issues so there's more than a few and they're big problems that he won't fix them for her. Her problems anger him or else he wouldn't curse just there or at all. She makes too many mistakes but it's different each time "it's never the same, every time you slip, then you fall down..." [or he could be referring to her being a drunk not just an alcoholic]. She's pretty self absorbed because she's not thinking about what's on his mind[which could mean she's depressed]. He wants to get rid of her or kick her out of the house. He's glad they broke up because she pissed him off. He was afraid[probably] what would happen to her after they broke up but now that she's gone it doesn't scare him anymore.[Personally I think she changed after they broke up like became just mean which is why he says "sent you packing, look who's laughing now"] He's glad he doesn't feel bad about getting rid of this girl because she was a drag. when he says "put your problems down and pick up what's left of the pain" put down the bottle and stop suppressing pain with drinking, face the pain. She blames everyone else for her issues when she should be blaming herself because everything is pretty much self-inflicted. I believe he made the chorus, the chorus because the chorus repeats most and he wants her to know he's glad she's gone... usually songs saying i'm over u have some kind of indication the writer is not fully over it but this is an exception, the only part that might have meant anything was "I was so afraid" but that's almost fully contradicted by rest of the chorus.
