I disagree because we must ask ourselves why would someone write a song about dining alone if it's not that big a thing. That's what leads me to think that this dining alone in public scene is a concretization of a situation which could reveal much more about our relationships with strangers.
In that regard, I think that the protagonist of this song puts way too much attention to those around him, feeling himself observed and looked down because of him being alone. He gets even to the point of coming up with an internal dialogue to justify his lack of friends.
In fact, I believe that the "Me" and the "You" in this song are the same person: He is talking to himself questioning even whether if he has aims in life or not.
