Lyrics

The Garden State, And from the looks, all pitiful and gray. As I awake to the garbage men today, I hope they take all of my old mistakes, 'Cause I can't seem to shake them on my own.

My eye it spins When I look at the mirror and spit at The man I see, with anchors for his eyes. I build my castles up at the sky So when it rains, they melt away with shame.

(This is the Chorus) Here I am, Looking down at The bottom of the glasses. It's all my fault that, I need a sign, Like shooting stars, To help connect the dots And turn my cuts into scars.

All of my fears Are getting checked by the medicine I take. All the other guys just gather rumors of descent. There will be a riot in my heart still. It wants to be beneath the open sky.

(Chorus plays again)

My regrets are what keep me still alive. I need to make up for all the lies. My regrets are what keep me still alive. I need to make up for all the lies.

(Chorus plays twice.)

Meaning:

"The Garden State, And from the looks, all pitiful and gray. As I awake to the garbage men today, I hope they take all of my old mistakes, 'Cause I can't seem to shake them on my own."

Can't really make sense of "The Garden State", perhaps a reference for something I don't know. As for the next line "And from the looks, all pitiful and gray." Say how everything looks "pitiful" and bland, I believe referring to himself. The next lines "As I awake to the garbage men today, I hope they take all of my old mistakes, 'Cause I can't seem to shake them on my own." He awakens to "Garbage men" or I guess rather their machines and they're loudness, ya know, since they make the really annoying beeps. He hopes that they take all his mistakes because the mistakes are like garbage he doesn't want. and he can't get rid of them, because his mind thinks about how horrible the mistake was.

Next part:

"My eye it spins When I look at the mirror and spit at The man I see, with anchors for his eyes. I build my castles up in the sky So when it rains, they melt away with shame."

For "My eye it spins, When I look at the mirror and spit at.. The man I see, with anchors for his eyes." I believe this means something like, his eyes go over and over looking at the pitiful excuse for a man he sees in the mirror (himself). He thinks it's so bad he spits at the mirror he's looking at because it looks so bad that he sees himself looking at himself all depressed and his chin down looking down and gloomy (like an anchor his eyes just go really down like deep into the sea, that's how depressed he is). As for "I build my castles up in the sky.. So when it rains, they melt away with shame." I think this means, his house is so high up in the sky so that when it rains the rain drips on it, and it melts away in shame that it touched his gloomy "castle up in the sky" (or at least that's how he feels).

The chorus is hard:

"Here I am, Looking down at The bottom of the glasses. It's all my fault that, I need a sign, Like shooting stars, To help connect the dots And turn my cuts into scars."

So here goes: "Here I am, looking down at, the bottom of the glasses." I think he's trying to show here that he's in a bar, looking down at the bottom of his glasses (of alcohol) hes been drinking, which shows a reflection of himself. Which is his normal pitiful self. "It's all my fault that, I need a sign, Like shooting stars, to help connect the dots and turn my cuts into scars." I believe this refers to how it's his fault that the big mistake happened. He needs a sign to show him (the shooting stars is just like a sort of miracle he thinks he needs) what he needs to do (connect the dots) and turn his current anguish of his mistake, into something he regrets doing but can forget so he can move on(turning current wounds, i.e. cuts into old forgotten wounds, i.e. scars.).

Next part:

"All of my fears Are getting checked by the medicine I take. All other guys just gather rumors of descent. There will be a riot in my heart soon. It wants to be beneath the open sky."

Alright.. "All of my fears, are getting checked by the medicine I take." This refers to "medicine" I assume being drugs, proving all his fears, that is knowing that it's his huge mistake, but doesn't want to admit it. Okay so... "All other guys just gather rumors of descent." All the other guys in the bar he's in, just look at him and think about what must of happened to him.. "rumors of descent" I think this means some of the guys knew him, then see him now "descending" from being happy to miserable. Then create rumors of what must have happened, even if not true. "There will.. be a riot in my heart soon, It wants to be.. beneath the open sky." I think this means that he thinks that his heart is so grievous it will kind of break by fighting itself. "It wants to be beneath the open sky".. rather than being shutted inside all the time mourning it's mistake, it wants to be outside in fresh air, and to socialize. The heart refers to his own real feelings. So he's fighting himself so much, that he stays inside a lot grieving, but he really wants to be out and to be able to forget what he did and live on. Without living horribly in a inside life.

The chorus again, expressing how bad his life is and how he's still at the bar, but after you knew that he wants really bad to be out.

The next part isn't too hard I think.

"My regrets are what keep me still alive. I need to make up for all the lies. My regrets are what keep me still alive. I need to make up for all the lies."

"My regrets are what keep me still alive. I need to make up for all the lies." This means that he's only alive because he wants to make up for all his mistakes. (I assume he can't for some reason.) He really needs to make up for it.

The chorus again, I feel more emphasized because he really wants to find a way out.

Finally one more time:

"My regrets are what keep me still alive. I need to make up for all the lies."

This is his very high desire, to make up for all his mistakes he's done. He feels he NEEDS to make up for all his mistakes (the lies.)

The parts I don't quite understand and is the deepest meaning of the song and the most hidden, is the mistakes he made. They seem to be a lie of some sort. I believe that he lied to someone he loved very deeply (perhaps his lover) and then she died soon later. (whether or not this is his fault or not I can't really understand, I don't think it's his fault though.) I think he just wants to let her (assuming the lies were to his lover) know that he's really sorry, and wants to seek redemption and/or forgiveness. His deepest feelings are just to get past it all and live on, and I think is to live on and get past it and I think make his lover happy, by moving on and finding happiness again (but he can't bear to live with getting hurt again.)
