I can't help but think of heroin use.

The metaphor of a gun as heroin was used pretty famously by the Beatles in happiness is a warm gun.
Plus once you think drugs, the whole thing sounds like a drug trip.
"And looking at the sky there is no pain , see the stars all falling down like burning rain , they were fired by the mightiest of guns"
"You see the sunday birds swinging low , and a fever in your brain only grows" - This is about needing drugs.
