I can believe no one has commented on this yet! Easily one of my favorites off of Illuminations.
I think the meaning is pretty self explanatory.. it basically sounds like a relationship that didn't work out, or is going downhill, but he's still got feelings and they're just trying to figure out what they're going to do..
