I remember reading that the band members grew up in Evangelical families, but have had trouble reconciling their beliefs. They wrote most of their songs as a response to that giant question mark in their minds about religion.
This song has a strong sense of a sadness and disconnection from Pentecostal beliefs. It seems like they don't understand the manifestation of the Holy Spirit, and the scripture doesn't really elucidate this phenomenon because within the Bible the mystery of the Holy Spirit is pretty hidden (and not without reason, I might add).
But the chorus shows kind of a hope that either they will eventually understand, or that we can simply carry on with life and it's okay to not have an answer.
