For me, Darkness Darkness is about a victim of great tragedy and great sorrow who wants nothing more than to rest and forget how to feel. This would be well enough, and it could account for the song on its own, but I get the feeling that there is something more here. "Hide the yearning/for the things that cannot be/keep my mind/from constant turning/towards the things I cannot see" sounds like a line hinting towards unachievable desires -- not only is their past marred with scars of horror, but they see no way for their future to bring whatever it is they need to make themself happy. They are tired of trying, tired of reaching for the stars. They want peace and tranquility, no blaring light to bring sight to they're sad, tired eyes.
