I think this song is about a couple leaving their hometown to live somewhere else and bear/raise their child. They have to leave everything behind and let go of everything if they can ever start their future. Unfortunately, they aren't able to do that and symbolically as well as maybe literally, the wife has a miscarriage. In the last verse the part where it says "she's already a pillar of salt" may refer to the story of Lot's Wife from the bible, who disobeyed the orders of angels who were destroying her home city while she was leaving it. They told her that she could not look back at the city while it was being burned but she did anyways, and turned into a pillar of salt. This could mean that once the miscarriage occurred, the woman in the song regretted ever leaving home.
