Lyric discussion by kathleenannex

This song is 100% centered around the death of seven year old Katie Flynn but I think the intent is to rope the listener in to how death affects both the family of the deceased and those (who are or who feel) at fault.

Here's a link to an article describing the incident: nytimes.com/2005/07/05/nyregion/05crash.html

So now, we know Katie was a flower girl at the wedding she had attended. Odd that they say he's volunteered with grace to end your life. Though they do likely mean to use grace as a word, grace was the other flower child at the weddings name, she survived the crash. The first half of the song (and many of the songs on this album) appear to be told from the mothers perspective. As though observing a court trial, most of these songs take you through the emotional journey that Katies mother is going through, as well the journey that her murderer Martin Heidgen is going through after drunkenly killing her.

Here's some of her moms perspective.

"K, here's your ride. Get your petals out and lay them in the aisle Pretend you garden grows, And it's your own day to wed We've found your man. He's drinking up. He's all-American, and he'll drive. He's volunteered with grace to end your life"

And then we have Martins, it sounds almost like he's contemplating suicide.

"Hey, you beauty supreme Yeah, you were right about me But can I get myself out from underneath This guilt that will crush me In the choir, I saw our sad Messiah He was bored and tired of my laments He said, "I died for you one time, but never again""

In the end I think that it's either Katies mom saying that Katie is in a safe place or that it's showing how this death has changed Martins view of life love and death (telling someone not to love him because he doesn't deserve it, stating that he'll never be loved or have children and never have to suffer a loss like Katies mother did).

"Well I love you so much, but do me a favor baby and don't reply Cause I can dish it out, but I can't take it I'll never have to buy adjacent plots of earth We'll never have to rot together underneath dirt I'll never have to lose my baby in the crowd I should be laughing right now"

I also thought it was an interesting use of the word grace seeing as that's her sister's name! Interesting... I'm glad you know this song is actually about Katie. I'm thinking maybe the first word is "Kate" and maybe Jesse just didn't pronounce the t well? Great input.

My mistake, it's definitely 'K' as was said many times~
