you're wrong actually. Andrew Oldham's version was an orchestral adaptation of the Stones song "The Last Time." In fact, when you listen to the Stones version AND Bittersweet Symphony they sound very similar in how they are sung. Any linear notes you look at give songwriting credits of Bittersweet Symphony to Jagger and Richards. It's because they wrote The Last Time. Andrew Oldham's Orchestra basically just covered it.

Allen Klein, who holds a majority of the Stones Catalog (much like Michael Jackson had the Beatles catalog), basically gave the Verve permission to use the orchestral loop in the song. But when he heard the manner in which it was sung he believed that the Verve used more than he agreed to allow them to use. The Rolling Stones were icons, the Verve were a young band known to be drug users. What did anyone think the Judge in that case was going to rule : )
