Goodbye Graceful

So this is my opinion. I have a feeling it will be long so sorry. Verse 1: Pretty simple, he feel so deep due to the fact he never faced his demons (things that have happened that haunt him in a sense), but he survived. "Lurking at the edge of my bed/get the fuck out of my head" I feel is the fact he is an addict who is sober now, but will always face that temptation even if he is around sober people. So, using a bed room and mind setting of where he is haunting are the most personal places, especially his mind therefore he is telling temptation to stop following him to bed in a sense and also saying to leave his mind. I feel this is almost like an introduction to a story he is telling, and as if he is going to tell us how he is better now, when he first started getting better, when he finally came to a breaking point, how he began to fix it, and the song ending with him fixing a lot. The reason I do not say completely fix everything because you can face your past, right many wrongs, but you always fight temptation as an addict which is the reason for those last two lines. Chorus: So I feel "graceful" represents one of two things, one an actual person or two god. I normally don't add a religious aspect, but because it really could be either and I prefer it being a person since I relate, but when you link everything together god sounds really well. So, when I mean god, I mean he put faith in god to lead him in the right direction, help him face the demons he must, and give him strength to become and remain sober. The goodbye I believe doesn't mean goodbye for good but more of a goodbye for now. Like, I'm off to do what I can in a good way, finish facing my demons since that does not happen overnight, and hopefully attempt and succeed to right the wrongs he has made. Now onto the chorus meaning, either this person or god helps him change his bad ways and made him a better man ("who I am today"). Now if you go with the god theory, it could be how god helped him change his ways. Also, thankful that god didn't let him die because he feels since he did so much wrong he would've gone to hell ("burning flames"). So he was given a chance to do good and gain redemption by fixing the wrongs he could along with other things that could be seen as redemption. (Ex: helping somebody, and what better way to help than provide lyrics that someone can see motivational and those who've experienced struggle can continue moving forward) All that making him who he is now, a better person.
Verse 2: The dark cloud symbolizes the demons he still hasn't faced yet. He has faced some, but hasn't faced them all. "and if I die before I wake/Tell the devil I'm on my way" can be seen as him still feeling he no matter what is a bad man. Or if you look at it through the god theory, he feels he hasn't fully gained redemption and would still go to hell if he were to die, therefore I feel he purposely makes the line "and if i die.." exactly the same as the bedtime prayer. Again, the last two lines about lurking and to get out of his head hold the same meaning of temptation due to his addiction. Chorus: Same meaning as above. Bridge: This is the point he Chorus: same. Last verse: "Picking up...exit door" is how he still currently is facing those demons (when you face you're past, it isn't something that happens overnight. It can take weeks, months, or years.) I feel when you are battling demons you see that window or exit door but technically can't use it until you've completely faced them and let go of them. "This boulder on my shoulder it got heavier and colder" The boulder are the demons he never faced causing him to do wrong and become even more consumed by both past and new demons. "Til the day that I got sober, now it's slowly rolling over" Meaning that once he got sober and stopped escaping reality, he was able to begin the process of facing the past, always trying to correct all the wrongs possible, and that finally allowed the "boulder" to start rolling over. I love how he added slowly because it's a process, but just beginning the process is such a huge step and when doing so you must realize it doesn't all disappear in hours. Next line he apologizes to all the people he's done wrong. Next I hear "To all the girls, hearts I broke, whose tears I made them cry" basically apologizing to the girls he's hurt. "I know it's been a while/And you have travelled many miles/To let them win is not my style/I wrote this song to make you smile" this is directed towards the fans, and "them" I feel represents his demons, to his enemies, and to even ETF. As I said in my verse one meaning that I feel there is a certain pattern. Now if you look at verse one, the chorus, then the bridge, the chorus, then verse two, back down to the last chorus, and end it by going to the final verse of the song it is almost like a story. You have your intro, the chorus is like that thing that causes him to stop and think, he realizes he's been running and now stops, the chorus affects him again but makes he want to better himself, he has begun to start to slowly change but obviously fights temptation, the chorus again helps him continue, ending with the last verse restating what he did, how he is still working on it, and beginning to right the wrongs.
