Come on people, discussion! I have a feeling this song is primarily about death, and uses the metaphore of life being a stage production.

"You were going on at half-past seven, now it's going on a quarter 'til nine. All the angels want to know: are you lost or treading water?" sounds to me like someone has managed to avoid their own death, and the angels in Heaven are wondering where the person is.

"Happy yesterday to all. We were born to die". Happy yesterday because there our time has ended and there will be no tomorrow.

"You fight for freedom from devotion, a battle that will always begin with somebody giving you a piece of advice: By the way you're livin' in sin" is clearly about religion and trying to live your life without it. Maintain atheism?

I interpret the part about religion as alluding to how LGBT people tend to be castigated by the religious. I think the

"A rainbow never smiles or blinks It's just a candy colored frown"

is referring to the classical gay symbol. To me, the song isn't only about mortal despair. It is also about how LGBT people are denied freedom of sexual expression and are commonly not seen as enjoying 'genuine' happiness because they are considered to be indulging in simple perversions. So in other words, to me, it's a lamentation of the degradation of LGBT people as...
