The album isn't necessarily completely about the atomic bomb and WWII. The album is all socio-political, and talking about the NOW, not the past. The song is titled Blackout because it is about post catastrophe, and in my mind, takes place in the near future.
The beginning of the song, "I'm stuck in this bed you made/alone with this sinking feeling/I saw through the words you said/to the secrets you've been keeping." Thats humanity right now. We live in a society where everything is spoon fed to us. Do this, watch this, eat this, look like this, etc. (The bed you made). The sinking feeling is the rising in consciousness of the people. As more and more corruption is exposed and parts of our history come into question, collectively we are beginning to realize that something is wrong. The next two lines adding support to that take on it.
"Blackout. Blood in your eye". This is post cataclysm. We are in rebellion, and blood is in the eyes of the power as the fight and fail to maintain control over the masses.
"You say that it's not your fault/And swear that I am mistaken/You said it's not what it seems". This is the game they will play and always have played when they are exposed. Only this next time, they WILL be held accountable "No remorse for the trust your breaking/You run to the back you fall/Suffocate in the mess your making".
"You can't get enough/You take and take and take and take and take/Fuck it are you listening" The power continues to take and take to make themselves more powerful (the military industrial complex). Because of this, we feel like they dont hear us. They choose to ignore us, because of their power.

"Floating out as colors fill the light/We look up from the ground in fields of paper white/Floating up you pass us in the night/The future gazing out a past to overwrite" At this point, the song changes in tone. From my perspective, the battle is over. The masses have won. They now have a past they need to rewrite because of being lied to and manipulated for so long by the power.
Now here is where everything is REALLY up to what you believe. Here is what I personally believe they are talking about.
"So come down far below/We've been waiting to collect the things you know/Come down far below/We've been waiting to collect what you've let go" In my eyes, this is the masses, looking to extraterrestrials for help in bringing back a semblance of order and peace on earth. I've come to this conclusion because of the title of the album and the cover. A thousand suns, in my mind, is referring to ships filling up our skies. The album cover is a picture of the sun, with spots of the sun being blocked out by objects in its direct path. What would these objects be? I guess thats all up to your interpretation. I would love to know what Linkin Park really intended these lyrics to mean.
