I guess I have a different take on this song that just about everyone else. I think it's coming from a different place. To me, this speaks of someone who has recently (or not so recently) become single, and there was one guy in her past that she keeps being drawn back to, but he's not the man either one of them thought he would be, and they can't make it work. He was the one who was always waiting for her to pick him, but he can't be her lover now, and no one can figure out how it's all supposed to work out.
