To me it seems like it could be about fanaticism, particularly religious fanaticism, and torch refers to angry mobs, and "Leave me to grieve that nothing's lost" could mean that nothing is lost because they believe in life after death, but still they greive when people die. It could be a reaction to something like Jesus Camp.
