Go to a beach or a mountain or hill overlooking a beach and pay close attention to the visual and lighting effect at sunset and the hour after and you'll understand. It is a routine thing for us who live close to the California coast, but not a common thing on the east coast unless you live on Florida's west coast/the carribean.
