I've always thought this song had a totally different meaning. I always assumed it was about unrequited love. After all, lines like "You're not really in my life" and "You can't break a heart that wasn't even yours to break" and the coup de gras: "You can never be there for me in the end" lends itself to the singer falling in love with a married man -- or other taken lover. After all, what could "I will do the right thing" refer to if not to leave a situation that is both morally and ethically wrong? This is further supported when she sings "You've drawn heavy handed lines around morality" as well as "...it hurts to be the one that you'd regret".
I felt like this song was about unrequited love as well. I felt this EXACT way when I felt something for someone I knew I was not available to me and I was not available to him though at some level we wanted to be. It just wasnt in the cards at the time. It never will be. It hurts but the choices made benefited my family and I love them so much. This person has been a love of mine for a long time and will always be but I WILL do the right thing...raise my kids and respect...
