I believe this song might have something to do with the state of the world. The first verse, in particular is probably about how humans are endagering animal species. "All the fur and fin will lose again / cause our better is thier worst reckonin'" That's pretty much saying that animals are continuosly losing. The "better" of the human race, or rather human "progress" is endagering animals. "and our fine feathered friends will sing until they bleed / and how will we replace that symphony" If things continue the way they are, there will be no creatures left and there will be no way to replace them and restore the balance we disrupted. I'm not entirely sure what the chorus is about, but I think the second verse is saying that we are teaching our kids about how to fight in war ("do the dirty work of battle hymns") be a complacent cog in the corporate scene ("We'll teach them how to walk / and whistle while they work").
