although i can definitely see this being about love, my interpretation is that it's depression.
first verse and chorus:
after you've been down a number of times before and you suddenly find yourself back in that downward spiral, you realize you've become accustomed to it. you know what to expect, and "no matter how much [you] pretend," you're back there again and you're just going to have to get through it.
second verse:
even if you've made it out of that down before, and you're pretty sure you'll be okay, there's always that feeling that maybe this time you'll stay like this f o r e v e r. sometimes that's scary, and sometimes it almost doesn't matter.
third verse:
when you do come out of it, you remember that feeling. you wonder, how did i get there? how could i feel so bad then, and fine now? but you know there's no guarantee that you won't be right back in that bad place next week, and you wonder if you'll ever find something that makes you feel entirely "right"
