i don't think the girl actually died. I think this song has to do with their relationship. For some reason the girl leaves him and leaves him sad. I think it was a breakup neither wanted, but for some reason better for her. Or maybe after summer they must return to normal lives; it couldve been a vacation spot they met at.
He tries to get her back or make things work, but he cant.
She doesnt actually fade, but her actual being with him does and her memory becomes less vivid. He's sad about it but hes letting her memory go, thinking he will see her again next summer. But when that time comes he doesnt get her back.
