My fav song in "Our Love to Admire". I really tried to give a meaning to this song that suits every line and I think that I have done it. Well maybe I am not even close enough to what Interpol tried to tell us, but who cares.
"You can't hold it too tight
These matters of security
You don't have to be wound so tight,
Smoking on the balcony"
It talks about the "security" of women (but in life also men) that they have, so they cannot be hurt/wound from other people. We want our emotions to be secured, otherwise we are very vunerable. And we don't expose or show this security, cause we don't want other people to know that we have it.
"But it's like sleaze in the park
You women, you have no self-control
We angels remark outside
You are known for insatiable needs
I don't know a thing"
The sleaze in the park, is the hurt that a woman feels when her emotions are hurted. They have no-self control sometimes, and they show their feeling quite clear. We (men) remark outside, we try to understand what has happened and why you react like that. We think that you have insatiable needs that we cannot satisfy. I don't know i thind refers to that we haven't find a way yet, or we don't understand you at all.
"I've seen love
And I follow the speed in the starlight
I've seen love
And I follow the speed in the star-swept night"
Here a man is talking. He has seen love, from women, and be in a relationship that everything was going to fast. Also I think that the starlight may refer to the beauty that a woman give to a man, like the light of a star.
"Yeah, pace is the trick
And to all the destruction in man"
Pace is the trick. In a relationship both sides must walk along, and hurry or be left behind. And the destruction in man, refers to the hurt that a man can do to woman and the other way around maybe.
"Well, I see you as you take your pride, my lioness
Your defenses seem wise, I cannot press
And detention's at demise, my lioness
Can't you hurt it some?
Think I hurt it"
The woman, after "clear expression" of her emotions, when the man didn't understand a thing, takes her pride. She is still the lioness of the man. He still loves her, but cannot press her defences. The woman's attentions die slowly. And then the man ask "Can't you hurt it some?", and it means the man's pride, the man's feeling. His own feelings. The man realizes: "Think i hurt it some" and he means the pride of his lioness. And in eschange he asks if she can hurt him to, and he know she will.
"And now I select you, slow now to let you
See how I stun"
And then the man, after he realizes that he hurt his lioness and have been hurt by her, he selects her, and let her slowly, with the right pace. But he stuns, cause he does something that he doesn't want to do, he doesn't want to let her. And asks her "See how I stun?" so he can show her that he want his lioness back, and hopes that she will forgive him.
"And to all the destruction in man
And to all the corruption in my hand"
Here again he realizes what he has done, and what he is able to do to a woman without knowing.
"You don't hold a candle"
I guess this is a song with not a happy end though. The woman doesn't hold a candle for her man, she does not forgive him. And they seperate from each other, with not many left to be said.
P.S. This may just be a meaning that I gave from personal expreriances, but this is what music and songs are all about.
