I like the interpretation from rebound89 but the guy doesn't necessarily have to be a bad guy he could just be some one considered not "normal" or some one who isn't really understood "See I, Can fool them all"
then he finds an amazing girl who understands him "And you know me better Than I know myself" he stuffs up huge or he believes that he isn't good enough for her and breaks it off. Then looking back he greatly regrets this decision.
