I had never looked up lyrics to this album until today and I can't believe how far away the actual themes can be when compared to the dreamy music you hear. Heck, you can even call it romantic to listen to with ur partner!
So after so many interpretations about twisted sickos and murderers I can't NOT see the resemblance between this very short song with minimal lyrics and John Fowles' The Collector. Anyone read it? It has inspired many generations of abductors to trap girls in their basements and do horrible stuff to them (although this never happens in the novel).
The novel is structured in 3 parts: first the abductor's account (pretty deranged in his innocent way of explaining things and expressing his feelings), then the girl's diary during her confinement (the lyrics to this song could match some poems / desperate messages she writes down as she's trying to starve herself to death), and finally the guy's perspective on how the thing ended.
So I've just lost a wonderful album that I thought was about sweet love and the daze that you're in and flood of feelings. But I've also gained a really surprising collection of songs that work at a totally different level than what the melody might make you believe: it's all just as innocently soft as The Collector's distorted mind not realizing the gravity of his intentions.
This song is almost definitely about addiction. It's really sad and dreamy. "It's all a part of his plan/it's all in his hands" is a very AA type of message...and then "But I never asked for it..." yeah, no one asks to be an addict. It's a terrible disease. A lot of addicts ask themselves and their respective god/higher power WHY. and I think that's what this song is kind of about...that whole, okay yeah God's got this under control, but seriously, why? And it's a resigned sort of sadness, you can hear it in his voice and in the...
