the point the song is making is that the kid is different for being content, he doesn't need "tons of friends" to feel good about himself and sees his piers planning their lives as a conscious move closer to the end of it. as for everyone here 'being that kid' i doubt that somebody with that level of INSIGHT would be trying to impress a bunch of strangers by telling them how un-conventional they are.
