I think this song talks about loneliness and dependence of the loved one, You love someone that is not around all the time and you need that person, but after too much time of waiting you start to feel depressed and you prefer to love that person from the grave.
I personally see it more as two people who have feelings for each other, but are either in a long distance relationship or simply often/forever separated from each other due to circumstances. So that someone whose perspective the lyrics are written from needs to believe there's still a future for the couple/lovers/whatever they actually are or used to be. Gotta say I still wonder/am a little confused about those two lines in particular, though:

I see it as something along the lines of "There are times when you might as well be there." Kinda hoping said person will return.
