I think it's about a break up, or something not working out between two people. He still has feelings for her but he never had the courage to tell her the words he wanted to say. He's alright if she's alright. Basically, he's saying that he still cares about her a lot, he still lingers for her to be around and seems to dance around the thought of them being together often. Whatever they're going through he's going to wait for her. At the same time It's hurting him to do so.
If you were a stone then I'd be the rain
Turn you to sand as the time slips away
I don't know what this exactly interprets. What I've come up with the last part
"Turn you to sand as the time slips away" Rain obviously washes sand away.. So maybe
it has something to do with the person slipping away just like the time.
Clutching your roots as you reach skyward.
Not wanting them to leave, holding them back so they don't leave.
"I am a metaphor for all the things I couldn't say" Stating that I am this way, I feel this way, I have this mind set because all the things i couldn't say. The things I couldn't say resemble the person they've been acting. Maybe, sadness, pain, hurt, or regret.
"Like scratching diamonds I have tried to find my way to you" The only thing that scratches diamonds are other diamonds. Diamonds alone are rare to come across. Having a hard time finding someone.
"But we're both moving in reverse" Obviously they're moving backwards to the state they were before. Drifting apart.
-"Some nights you're a photograph fading in my memory" All I have left is my memory of the her.
"Some days I feel you on my skin" Some days it feels like they're still apart of them.
"We're trading silence" What was once trading conversation or body language. They are now not speaking to each other.
"There are words that seem to steal our breath" Words they can not bring themselves to say because it leaves them breathless.
"And I just dream about your lips" The other person is still lingers on their mind.
"My hands in your leaves" Obviously if the other person was a tree their hands would be leave
I don't think I've hit the nail on the head with this. Listening to it again I know I missing something but i can't come up with it.
