I think this song is about leaving a relationship behind. You have a lot of feelings for that person, but you know they aren't what you really need & no matter how hard you try, it's not going to work. I get the feeling from reading the lyrics that maybe he doesn't want to see her go or watch her leave, but deep down he knows that's what is supposed to happen. It almost seems that he's trying to convince himself (not her) that after she left, he has been ok, and he can get by without her.
