i interpret this song much more personally. i don't think it's about society not accepting you and your changes, but more about not accepting yourself.

to me the struggle is internal - you don't even know yourself anymore, or how to came to be who you are, and you don't like it, you call YOURSELF a villain in a story YOU wrote!
so death cab's answer: make the change! don't blame yourself for how you got there, just get out of the rut!
oh, and i also meant to say that it certainly sets a different and more upbeat tone for this album! (and the fire/rebirth theme is reminiscent of grapevine fires and your heart is an empty room)
