I have a friend that I swear this song is autobiographical for him! It's about knowing someone for a long time and repeatedly trying to help them better themselves, but it ain't happening. Someone with a complete lack of motivation or drive, and a surplus of bad habits("And what you got in the bag?" Alcohol/drugs), possibly a violent streak("Why didn't you just stay home?" A lot of people ask themselves that same question when they get into trouble in public).
