Wrong Susan! Chicago most certainly does have an east side. Grant Park? S. Lake Shore dr.? A little road called Michigan ave? Any of those ring a bell? Gino's? Navy Pier for God's sake?
And the shootout not being real? So what? When did it become a rule that a song must contain nothing but factual, documented historical lyrics? Give me a break. 90% of the every song ever recorded contains fictitious lyrics.
Actually, thExile, Chicago has an Eastside, but it is not the east side of downtown which you've described. The Eastside is the name of a neighborhood on Chicago's south side and boarders Indiana (look it up). Unfortunately, most of Chicago has forgotten about this part of Chicago, but the area has a very rich history. For instance, the bridge that the Blues Brothers jump in the movie (95th street bridge) - that was on the Eastside. The memorial Day Massacre of 1937 also took place on the Eastside.
