Here is my take on this wonderfully deep, but yet so simply put, lyrical genius...
First off, I don't think this is about anyone in particular, but more about the feelings you experience, and thinking about those feelings when you're looking back at what you've accomplished. Lets look at the lyrics individually and see if I'm making any sense...
"Got no reason for coming to me in the rain, running down
There's no reason"
Think about any relationship you had when you were young and knew what you wanted, you would willingly run to your love no matter what incumbencies were ahead. The rain could be pouring down, this wouldn't stop you because that is all that mattered right then. This idea is reinforced by the next set...
"And the same voice coming to me like it's all slowing down
And believe me"
Remembering when time stopped when you were with the only person that understood you... When time was all you had and when you were with her/him the world would disappear.
"I was the one that let you know
I was your sorry ever after 74/75"
Memories of friendships and relationships before graduating high school. think about all the people you knew then, how it was, and what they've become since. Most of us move on to our jobs, families, and our goals and ambition from those days fade in the lives we create around ourselves. This lyric reminds you to remember what you would have done, if you knew what you know now.
"It's not easy, nothing to say cos it's already said
It's never easy"
You can't take back what you've already said and done. Regretting choices, hind sight is always crystal clear. You always wonder what your life would be like now had you chosen A over B or C...
"When I look on your eyes then I find that I'll do fine
When I look on your eyes then I'll do better"
I imagine this has to do with meeting those people from that period of time, looking at their pictures, remembering them how they were, then knowing what they've become after the age of wonder. Looking into their eyes, you know you've become something you weren't planning, life got in your way and your goals faded with time and choice.
"Given me more and I'll do fine
Cos you're really only after 74/75"
Again, reminding you how simple things were in high school, but yet they seemed so complicated. All you could think about was growing up into something that you would be proud of, and it all starts when you graduate. After that, the bindings are cut, and the sky is the limit, or so you feel when you are in it...
The way I hear this song, while watching the video, the music tells the tale far greater than the lyrics. He's seeing his friends from the year book, then seeing them now and how they've grown, changed, created families, become themselves due to their choices.
