"The King", as he is nicknamed, is most well-known for winning the NASCAR Championship seven times (Dale Earnhardt is the only other driver to accomplish this feat), winning a record 200 races during his career, winning the Daytona 500 a record seven times, and winning a record 27 races (ten of them consecutively) in the 1967 season alone. (A 1972 rule change eliminated races under 250 miles (400 km) in length, reducing the schedule to 30 [now 36] races.) Petty is widely considered one of the greatest NASCAR drivers of all time. He also collected a record number of poles (127) and over 700 top-ten finishes in his 1,185 starts, including 513 consecutive starts from 1971—1989.

I want to add that I did my best to write down the lyrics above way back in 1986, and even went over them again today a few times with someone else here checking once again... I was very surprised it had not been added.

This song still gives me chills every time I hear it "and God only knows how you feel", no one can know that feeling, only the King!!! He never let me down, I grew up watching him & even Marty Robbins back then ; ) There is a documentary on Marty too ; )

I am old enough...
I am old enough to appreciate what this song is about. Car Racing started in the USA by boot Legers, moonshine runners. There is an excellent documentary on Junior Johnson.
I heard Kyle Petty sing this song one time & it broke my heart as this is Rodney Crowell's song.
A song Rodney wrote & sung from his & heart & soul about his hero Richard Petty... no one will ever sing this song as Rodney, not even King Richard's son...sorry Kyle.
Also from Wiki: Petty is a second generation driver. His father, Lee Petty, won the first Daytona 500 in 1959 and was also a 3 time NASCAR champion.
This ballad actually tells a history... Thank you Rodney!!! And thank you King Richard!!!
