I beleive the fundamental message of this song to be that regardless of who/what you are, what you do/don't have, the environment is more important than all else and therefore must be respected and protected before our bank accounts.
I also believe it is important to note the extended metaphore which is used to liken mother nature to human mothers, both of which being nuturing and caring. This helps creates the message that we must respect mother earth as we respect our "mamas".
