I'm surprised no one else has commented on this amazing song yet. woah.
I take it as a break up song. the girl still has nostalgic memories and feelings for the guy (I woke up wanting you)
but I'm guessing the guy pulled a heartless break up on her, probably some sadism in there (did your heart succeed / the way you want it to).
the second part of the song is more of a "now I'm realizing that I gradually hate you, you're an asshole" kind of thing; vast sky --> dead star --> cruel sea
