But it seems that his girl left a while ago. He's hanging on to a memory of her. If he's in Love with her memory or her, still -- is unclear. But the song isn't about her failing/leaving/breaking his heart, etc. It would seem the song is about his moving on, even if he's still in pain.
Riiiight after "I'm in pain," the tempo picks up slightly with volume and instrumentation. It's obviously positive directly after that line.
