It's being literal, and when he says he'll face his mistakes, he considers humanity "his kind" and he will either "create" a new history, or "recreate" the one that happened, and his anguish in Lunar Wilderness and his face-off with death shows his plan for humanity didn't work, and he wasn't able to face "his" mistakes and grow. I think Prospect 1 will be key to trying the plan again or something and actually fixing humanity's destructive traits...
